"I am young, nothing is going to happen to me..." This is what I hear from college students, or people in their 20s quite often. Most likely you are right, but as an adult, it is wise to plan for unexpected events.
As a young adult, if you should become incapacitated, either by a sudden event or by the onset of a mental disability, your parents or loved one won’t necessarily be able to make medical decisions for you, unless you have authorized them ahead of time. In California, you will need an Advanced Health Care Directive, (medical power of attorney) along with a HIPAA Authorization (to share your medical information with your chosen agent).
By having an Advanced Health Care Directive completed before you become incapacitated, you can make sure that your health care wishes are followed. For example, if you are in a car accident and are unconscious, the AHCD allows your chosen person to direct the doctor about your surgery and any medications preferences.
By having a Durable Power of Attorney, completed before you become incapacitated, you can designate someone to make financial decisions on your behalf. For example, if you are in a car accident and in a coma for an extended period of time, the DPOW allows your chosen agent to pay your rent and credit card bills and communicate with your bank.
I have put together a package , or permission slips, with the documents you need to cover you in the case of an unexpected medical situation.
This package includes the following:
